About the place ...
The ancient Someshwar Temple in Pashan, Pune, is a jewel of Hemadpanti architecture and spiritual devotion, serene on the banks of the Ram Nadi. Believed to be around 900 years old, it was constructed in the black stone style by patronage of Rajmata Jijabai, mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and later restored by prominent Maratha and Peshwa leaders. Its linkage to the miraculous discovery of a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shivalinga makes Someshwar one of Pune’s most sacred and ‘jagrut’ (wish-fulfilling) Shiva temples. Legend tells of its founding when a cowherd, witnessing a cow pour milk on a snake hole, dreamed of Shiva who instructed him to dig and reveal the hidden linga—the event central to centuries of faith and folklore
Set across 3.5 acres, the temple complex boasts three grand entrances—east, west, and south—and striking black stone walls that evoke strength and longevity. Surrounding the Shivalinga shrine are four smaller temples to Ganapati, Hanuman, Bhairavnath, and an open-air gallery displaying intricate models of the twelve Jyotirlingas from across India. A 40-foot-high Deepmala (lamp pillar) towers in the courtyard, enhancing the ambiance during evening festivals
Inside, the sanctum containing the Shivalinga is actually below ground level, requiring descent by steps—although darshan is now from a safe distance owing to preservation. The gathering hall, with paintings, photographs, and Modi-script inscriptions, commemorates the site’s storied history. The adjoining Yajna Kund and Tulsi Vrindavan attest to continued ritual importance, while Chakratirtha, a natural spring behind the temple, flows into the Ram and Mutha rivers.
The temple’s lore is matched by a long history of patronage and restoration, from Hanumante Maharaj’s samadhi to Peshwa-era, gold donations and even Mughal Sardar Shaista Khan’s contributions. Pune Municipal Corporation now lists Someshwar as a protected cultural heritage site. Annual festivals celebrate the temple’s traditions, drawing crowds for darshan, fairs, and spiritual joy. The peaceful atmosphere and lush setting make Someshwar a favorite retreat for both devotees and history enthusiasts
