About the place ...
Pataleshwar Cave Temple on Pune’s Jangli Maharaj Road is one of the city’s oldest heritage sites, a monolithic wonder carved from black basalt in the 8th century by the Rashtrakuta dynasty. Once positioned between “old” Pune and the village of Bhamburde (now Shivajinagar), its preservation as an ASI-protected monument offers visitors a fascinating journey into both legend and history. Local lore connects its origins to the Pandavas, claiming they built this cave for refuge in a single night during their exile, though art historians confirm it as a Rashtrakuta-era marvel inspired by Ellora and Elephanta caves
The layout centers around a circular Nandi pavilion hewn from a single rock, with 16 pillars (12 on the outer ring and 4 within) supporting a majestic rotunda and platform where Nandi gazes at the sanctum through a rain-washed courtyard shaded by old trees. Inside, the temple’s pillared sabhamandap is plain but powerful—30 square columns frame the assembly space, marked by semi-finished and unfinished relief panels hinting at its incomplete status. The sanctum houses bronze-clad Shiva (Pataleshwar) linga, with connected shrines for Ganesh and Parvati, and new marble idols of Ram, Lakshman, and Sita installed in the inner recesses
Pathways for parikrama (circumambulation) link the shrines, and the austere, meditative atmosphere fosters quiet reflection. The temple’s cave setting below ground level evokes the cosmic realms (‘Patal’—the underworld), and the lack of heavy ornamentation makes the play of sunlight and shadows inside especially striking. The temple’s bells, with their unusual, resonant sound, and a tiny museum holding a Guinness record grain of rice inscribed with 5,000 letters, add to the sense of wonder for those seeking hidden stories
The cave temple remains an active site of worship, hosting daily and festival crowds, especially at Shivratri and Shravan. It’s a haven for cultural enthusiasts, photographers, and families wanting a tranquil escape within bustling Pune
