About the place ...

Set in the ancient pilgrim town of Alandi on the banks of the holy Indrayani River, the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Samadhi Temple is one of Maharashtra’s most-visited and revered spiritual landmarks. Here, the legendary 13th-century saint-poet Dnyaneshwar entered sanjeevan samadhi (living shrined meditation) under the legendary Ajan tree in 1296 CE, just aged 21. This act made Alandi a spiritual heart for millions, venerated by saints like Namdev and Tukaram and cited in Skanda Purana as Anandvan, Karnika, and Siddha Kshetra

The temple complex has evolved over centuries—first constructed in stone around 1570 CE, with subsequent Maratha-era expansions sponsored by Mahadji Shinde and the Peshwas. Its elegant sanctum sits beneath a stunning dome with four entrances signifying universality and openness, and stands adjacent to the original Siddheshwar temple and the living Ajan tree, which is said to have sprouted from Dnyaneshwar’s staff. Within the richly-decorated Samadhi hall lies a silver mask of Sant Dnyaneshwar, flanked by idols of Vitthal and Rukmini, while the main hall features the silver palanquin (palkhi) used during the annual Pandharpur Wari pilgrimage. Lush ghats on the Indrayani river allow pilgrims and visitors to perform ritual ablutions before entering the serene temple space

The temple’s architectural charm combines a gentle dome, elegant walls, continuous lamps, portraits of Dnyaneshwar and his saintly siblings (Muktabai, Nivruttinath, and Sopandev), and silver railings, with surrounding shrines to Muktabai, Rama, Datta, and Vitthal. Significant nearby features include the Siddheshwar Shiva temple, Garud Mandap, lamp tower (Deepmala), and the historic Vishnupad ghat—used for ancestral rites like at Gaya

Festivals and pilgrimages form the temple’s soul—the Dnyaneshwar Palakhi procession, starting every Jyeshtha Vadya Ashtami, sees hundreds of thousands of Varkaris walking from Alandi to Pandharpur in devotional chant and service. On the saint’s samadhi anniversary (Kartik Vadya Trayodashi), legions gather to celebrate his eternal presence. Year-round, Bhakta Niwas lodges and dharamshalas serve pilgrims with prasadam and spiritual hospitality
